“I’m attending the University of Kansas Medical Center and KU Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center’s Midwest Conference on Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine and just heard fellow FACT board director Dr Joe McGuirk talk about their CAR T access paper published in Blood Journals Portfolio (Blood Advances) consisting of 10,016 lymphoma patients from the Flatiron Health network. A few take home messages:
- Real-world access for 2nd line CAR T for Large B cell Lymphoma in eligible/fit patients was 25%; 36% for 3rd line. This is peer-reviewed data demonstrating barriers to access.
- 11% of patients died after 1st line of treatment, before possible 2nd line CAR T treatment
- Of “fit” patients, higher socioeconomic status and being White were associated with increased access to CAR T. This is unacceptable and not strictly limited to the cost of the drug, but also inability to travel, inability to pay for out of pocket expenses, and lack of health insurance coverage.
