“This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re highlighting work from PICI researcher Robert Vonderheide and his team at the University of Pennsylvania.
In a preclinical study published in Science Magazine, the team used RAS inhibition to target microscopic precancerous lesions before they developed into invasive pancreatic tumors.
In immunocompetent mouse models, eliminating these early mutations nearly doubled overall survival compared with treatment after diagnosis.
The team is now exploring how this ‘cancer interception‘ approach could be combined with immunotherapies, vaccines and other targeted treatments, including in models of precancerous ER+ breast cancer.
