“I am honored to share that the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has selected for funding a five-year, $15.1 million project that I will lead to address one of the most important unanswered treatment questions for older adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML): for patients who achieve remission, should we proceed with upfront allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation or use contemporary non-transplant therapy?
The project will conduct three separate, multicenter pragmatic randomized trials enrolling approximately 800 adults aged 60 and older across 18 U.S. centers. Overall survival will be the primary outcome. We will also evaluate outcomes that patients and caregivers have told us matter greatly to them, including quality of life, physical and cognitive function, frailty, disability, treatment-related toxicity, and hospitalization. We will also examine whether the relative benefits and risks of the two treatment approaches differ between adults aged 60–69 and those aged 70 or older.
This project builds directly on our earlier PCORI-funded multicenter observational study, published in Blood in 2023, which established the need for these randomized trials
I am especially grateful to my long-standing collaborators at participating centers; many of whom worked with me on the previous PCORI project and helped build this new program. Without their partnership, neither the earlier study nor these trials would have been possible. I am equally grateful to the patients, caregivers, and other stakeholders whose perspectives have shaped the research and will continue to guide the work ahead.
I look forward to working together to generate the evidence that patients, families, and clinicians have needed for far too long.
