“In 2024, a new era of ‘scientific revolution’ for small cell lung cancer arrived.
Tremendous progress with novel therapeutics (IO, TCEs, ADCs) offer a new HOPE as highly effective agents. Sustained disease control over years and increasing cure rates, including in patients with historically poor prognostic risk factors (i.e., brain or liver metastases, platinum-resistant relapse), warrant a RENEWED perspective. Yet, outdated expectations of futility with entrenched nihilism, unconscious expectations, and perpetuated stigma for patients with SCLC hinder access to ‘high-quality care.’
High-quality care = early palliative care + maximized support + access to novel therapies. Here, we highlight current gaps in care, the impact of early palliative care, and outline a dialog framework of high-quality care as an integral component for SCLC. Ideally, ALL patients should have timely access expert oncologic care + skilled palliative care shortly after diagnosis for comprehensive multi-D care.
We implore the medical community to join us by advocating for a new culture shift toward high-quality care for ALL patients with SCLC.”
