Maryam Lustberg, Director of the Center for Breast Cancer at Yale University School of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:
“As we discuss optimal evidence based management of menopause symptoms in patients with hormone receptor positive breast cancer, it is helpful to discuss contemporary risk of recurrence for shared decision making.
A familiar figure from 2017 is often cited from Pan et al NEJM. These are older data that may not fully reflect current systemic therapy advantages.
Newer data from EBCTG show modest meaningful improvements in outcomes as systemic therapies including endocrine therapies have improved. Recurrences continue through 15 years (and beyond but data limits).
Newer real world data sets are also emerging. Each woman deserves a detailed discussion of her risk of recurrence and ways to mitigate it while supporting symptom managment and overall health goals.”
