Jill Feldman: New Research Explores the Genetics Behind Familial Lung Cancer

Jill Feldman, Co-Founder at EGFR Resisters, shared on X:

“New research deepens our understanding of inherited lung cancer risk. Researchers analyzed genetic data from 3.3M+ people to better understand germline EGFR T790M, a rare inherited mutation.

Key points:

  • Germline ≠ somatic. Finding T790M in a tumor does not mean it was inherited
  • Carriers had 25× higher odds of lung cancer, but the mutation is rare – about 1 in 15,000 people
  • It explains some familial lung cancer, but not all. I’m not a carrier despite 3 generations of lung cancer in my family.

The research gets us closer to the questions that matter: Who should be screened? When should screening start? How often? And ultimately, how do we find lung cancer earlier, when it’s most treatable? Help spread the word about our Lung Cancer Genetics Study.

Together, we can make a difference in the fight against lung cancer.

Huge thanks to the Susan Wojcicki Foundation, 23andMe, and everyone involved.”
