Itziar Canamasas: Why Tumor Biology Matters in Precision Oncology

Itziar Canamasas, Global Head of Oncology at Boehringer Ingelheim, shared on LinkedIn:

“Every cancer has its own biology. That should shape how we research, diagnose and care for people facing cancer.

Biomarker testing can reveal characteristics that a diagnosis alone may not capture. By understanding the biology behind a person’s cancer, we can build a clearer picture of the disease and inform more personalized treatment options.

This matters most in hard-to-treat cancers, where people have waited a long time for something that speaks to their specific situation.

We should seek to understand tumor biology from the outset, so that these insights can inform the decisions that follow.

This principle guides our work at Boehringer Ingelheim: following the science of each cancer, whether that means targeting a specific mutation, understanding biomarker expression, or uncovering potential therapeutic targets.

What we care about is meaningful impact for people with cancers that have seen too little progress.

As the oncology community gathers at ESMO 2026 in Madrid, I want to put a question to all of us who research, diagnose and care for cancer: are we asking enough about the biology that makes each person’s cancer unique?

We need to understand the biology of cancer earlier, more consistently and with greater precision. That is where better outcomes begin.

Precision oncology is a commitment we keep renewing together every day for everyone facing cancer.”
