Haimanot Kasahun Shares Study on Pain Outcomes After Radiotherapy in Ethiopian Cancer Patients

Haimanot Kasahun, Clinical Oncologist at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Ethiopia, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in Translational Oncology.

“It’s a pleasure to share with you that our article on ‘Patient Reported Change in Pain Outcome among Stage IV cancer patients with bone metastases following palliative radiotherapy: A prospective study from Ethiopia’ is published at Translational Oncology. This paper aims to fill the gap on the topic in SSA, as data in this region is scarce. Our paper could highlight that:

  1. Palliative radiotherapy administered to stage IV cancer patients with painful bone metastases is effective in reducing pain severity in the majority of patients in Ethiopia.
  2. Pain response to palliative radiotherapy is comparable between patients receiving a single dose of radiation therapy and those receiving a fractionated dose of 20 Gy in the Ethiopian cancer care setting.
  3. Moreover, in this paper, we showed the gap in the anti-pain medication prescription with future recommendations.”
