International initiative dedicated to studying patients with myelodysplastic syndromes – FAARO

French – Armenian Academic Research Organization (FAARO) – Santé Arménie shared an article by Anna Sevoyan, et al. on LinkedIn:

Did you know?

The Observatory of Myelodysplastic Syndromes and Secondary Chemo- and Radiation-Induced Leukemias, led by the Groupe Francophone des Myélodysplasies (GFM), is a major international initiative dedicated to studying patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)—focusing on their clinical characteristics and disease progression.

By collecting real-world patient data, researchers can analyze treatment responses, refine therapeutic strategies, and contribute to advancements in hematology.

In 2021, with the help of FAARO and Prof. Arsene Mekinian, the “Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center, Ministry of Health of Armenia” joined this registry.

Participating Investigators:

  • Principal Investigator: Dr. Yervand Hakobyan
  • Co-investigator: Dr. Anna Sevoyan

As of February 2024, blood sample collection for the GFM-MDS registry has begun, with samples now stored in the Santé Arménie Biobank—a significant step toward participation in international ancillary studies.

Armenia is one of 104 centers participating in the GFM registry, alongside France, Belgium, Monaco, and Brazil, including 14 Greater Paris University Hospitals – AP-HP centers.

Key Objectives in Armenia:

  • Compare therapy strategies and patient data with the French cohort.
  • Identify prognostic factors and treatment responses specific to Armenian patients.
  • Strengthen Armenia’s role in international hematology research.

FAARO’s Clinical Research Associates Contributions:

  • Adaptation of study documents into Armenian.
  • Verification of signed consents.
  • Support with data collection in the eCRF.
  • Submission of study documents to Ethics Committee.

Registry Milestones:

  • Ethics Committee approval received: 07/10/2021.
  • First patient inclusion: 27/10/2021.
  • Total patients included so far: 71.

Research Contribution:

  • MDS/CMML from a Resource-Limited Region: Characteristics and Comparison to a European Tertiary Reference Center, published in February 2024. Read more here.

The investigators also conducted an analysis based on this data and presented “Diagnosis and Treatment of MDS Patients in Armenia” at OncoDaily Leukemia 2024 in collaboration with MDS Foundation.

FAARO is proud to support the GFM-MDS registry, helping strengthen international research efforts and contribute to improving MDS treatment and patient outcomes in Armenia and beyond.
