We are excited to share this new review, “Towards liquid biopsy-based analysis of antitumor immunity” recently published in Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology by Klaus Pantel, Doryan Masmoudi, Catherine Alix-Panabières
As immunotherapies continue to transform cancer treatment, there is an increasing need for biomarkers that can monitor patients throughout their treatment journey – not just at diagnosis.
This review explores how liquid biopsy (LB) can complement tissue biopsy by providing a minimally invasive window into systemic antitumor immune responses through the analysis of ctDNA, CTCs, extracellular vesicles (EVs), plasma proteins and immune cells.
Key highlights:
- Blood-based biomarkers provide complementary insights into tumor burden, immune activation and immune evasion throughout cancer progression.
- LB analyses have the potential to monitor immunotherapy response, detect minimal residual disease (MRD), and identify emerging resistance before clinical progression.
- LB complements tissue biopsy, offering valuable insights into systemic immunity while tissue remains essential for characterizing the tumor microenvironment.
- Realizing the full clinical potential of liquid biopsy will require rigorous validation, standardization, broad accessibility, and the integration of multi-omic and AI-based approaches into clinically actionable decision-support tools.
