David Spetzler: What If We Could Know Which Pancreatic Cancer Treatment Is More Likely to Work?

David Spetzler, President of Caris Life Sciences, shared on LinkedIn:

“Nearly half the patients in our new pancreatic study received a different first-line treatment than the one our model identified as more likely to benefit them.

The research, recently published in npj Precision Oncology, found that an AI-derived molecular signature can help distinguish which patients with advanced pancreatic cancer are more likely to benefit from one of the two most common first-line regimens.

Patients whose treatment matched the model’s prediction lived longer than those whose treatment did not.

But insight only matters if the oncologist can access it when a decision needs to be made.

The pancreatic signature is included in the Caris Molecular Tumor Board Report, available upon request at no additional cost when a physician orders MI Cancer Seek.

There is no separate send-out, additional charge, or second specimen required.

This is possible because the signature is built on whole exome and whole transcriptome sequencing. Small panels do not generate the breadth of data these models require, which is why this capability is proprietary to Caris and available as part of what they already order.

Pancreatic cancer leaves clinicians little room to revisit a first-line treatment decision. Bringing tumor biology into that conversation, through a report they already receive, is the kind of capability we should be working toward for every cancer type.
