Daniel Morgenstern: Selpercatinib Shows Impressive Response and Disease Control Rates in Rare Pediatric Cancers

Daniel Morgenstern, Staff Physician at The Hospital for Sick Children, shared on LinkedIn:

“Loxo Oncology (since acquired by Eli Lilly) was really a poster child for early pediatric drug development in oncology and what could be achieved with molecularly-targeted agents developed simultaneously for adults and pediatrics.

The initial success with the NTRK inhibitor larotrectinib was followed by the RET inhibitor selpercatinib.

The results of the pediatric phase I/II study are now available in Journal of Clinical Oncology – showing really impressive response and disease control rates, albeit for a rare subset of the overall pediatric cancer population.

‘Right target, right drug and right patient – clear clinical benefit.’

We now need to do the same for more pediatric cancers with either unknown targets, or clear targets, but no suitable drugs…

Many thanks to the NAIT team at The Hospital for Sick Children for their work on this study and to Jonathan Wasserman for his collaboration in identifying potential patients.”
