Caleb Lareau: AI-Designed Proteins Offer a New Approach to Targeting Tumors

Caleb Lareau, Principal Investigator at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, shared on LinkedIn:

“Three years ago, I started my dream job at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to lead a lab at the interface of computational biology and cancer research. Today marks a major milestone: our first paper using generative artificial intelligence to create new molecules to attack tumors has been published in Nature Biomedical Engineering.

This work was led by three fearless trainees in the lab, Arthur Chow, Hoyin Chu, and Ruofan Li who collectively assumed an incredible risk working with a new PI in a new area of study. Together, they led an end-to-end discovery of new proteins to high-throughput characterization to a stunning characterization of the possibilities of tumor controls in vivo for new molecules created by artificial intelligence.

I’m infinitely grateful to work in an environment with leaders and colleagues who have only encouraged me to take intellectual risks that may lead to new treatments for our patients. This is the first work in this area, but more is coming soon.
