Francisco Esteva: New Study Shows that BSO Markedly Reduces Cancer Risk in BRCA1/2 Carriers
Francisco Esteva, Director of the Breast Cancer Translational Research at Northwell Health and Chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Hend Hassan et al. published in The Lancet Oncology:
“New study shows removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes markedly reduces cancer risk in BRCA1/2 carriers.
In women with pathogenic BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants who previously had breast cancer, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy – BSO significantly cuts all-cause mortality by 48% and breast cancer-specific mortality, with reductions of 38% in BRCA1 and 52% in BRCA2 carriers. BSO also decreases the risk of a second non-breast cancer by 41% without increasing the risk of major diseases, showcasing a safe profile.
This research is pivotal given the variation in BSO uptake linked to ethnicity and socioeconomic factors, needing targeted educational and healthcare interventions to bridge disparities. With a moderate follow-up period and potential confounding, further studies are necessary, particularly concerning hormone replacement post-BSO.”
