Adebayo Falola: Outcomes of the robotic approach with laparoscopy for the management of CRC in Africa
Adebayo Falola, Medical Student at College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, shared a recent article on LinkedIn:
“Earlier this month, our paper was published in Surgical Endoscopy, journal of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and EAES – European Association for Endoscopic Surgery.
The study is a systematic review and meta-analysis that compared outcomes of the robotic approach with laparoscopy for the management of colorectal cancer in Africa.
The review is the first to pull together the minimally invasive surgeries for colorectal cancer done across Africa and compare the outcomes.
The results we obtained regarding the mean blood loss, hospital stay, duration of surgery, conversion rate, and the prevalences of morbidity and mortality of the two approaches are important for policy makers, international organizations, researchers, and surgeons, regarding making decisions to optimize care for colorectal cancer patients in Africa.
We appreciate and acknowledge the research committee of the Nigerian Society for Colorectal Disorders (NSCRD) for reviewing and endorsing the project.
The work was presented at the 2nd Midlands Robotic Colorectal Symposium, the 6th Pan-African Organization For Health, Education and Research (POHER) symposium and at the Royal Society of Medicine 13th Winter Colorectal meeting.
