“We join many around the world in mourning the passing of Dr. Harold Freeman, a visionary whose courage, compassion, and determination transformed cancer care.
In the late 1980s, Dr. Freeman recognized that for many patients, access to care was shaped by barriers extending far beyond a diagnosis. His pioneering work in Harlem gave rise to patient navigation, a model that fundamentally changed how healthcare systems support patients and their families.
Perhaps the greatest testament to Dr. Freeman’s legacy is that it continues to grow. The seeds he planted in Harlem now reach patients and families in countries and communities around the world, creating pathways to care, hope, and support.
His work became a global movement, inspiring the formation of the Global Alliance for Cancer Patient Navigation, a coalition of institutions and organizations committed to advancing evidence-based, sustainable patient navigation worldwide. By bringing together global partners to expand the reach, quality, and impact of navigation, the Alliance continues to advance the vision Dr. Freeman first set in motion decades ago.
