A Career Rooted in Argentine Oncology
Dr. Eduardo Cazap is a renowned Argentine oncologist who served two terms as President of the Argentine Association of Clinical Oncology, from 1996 to 1998 and again from 2000 to 2002. His leadership within Argentina helped strengthen clinical oncology as a professional field and supported the development of organized cancer care across the country.
For more than 20 years, he served as Director of the Dr. Estévez Oncology Institute, guiding oncology services, clinical practice, and institutional development. He also founded the Oncology Service at Hospital Parmenio Piñero in the City of Buenos Aires, contributing directly to the expansion of cancer care in the public health setting.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Eduardo Cazap served as a physician at the Institute of Oncology, Maissa Foundation, at the National Academy of Medicine of Argentina. These roles reflect a career grounded in clinical care, institutional service, and a deep commitment to oncology access in Argentina.
Building Bridges Between Latin America and Global Oncology
Dr. Eduardo Cazap’s work has consistently connected Latin American oncology with the broader international cancer community. In 2005, he founded and became the first President of the Latin American and Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology, known as SLACOM.
This was a defining contribution to regional oncology. SLACOM created a platform for medical oncologists across Latin America and the Caribbean to collaborate, exchange knowledge, strengthen professional standards, and address shared regional challenges in cancer care.
His regional leadership continued through his work with the Network of National Cancer Institutes of Latin America, known as RINC. In 2019, he founded the alliance between RINC and SLACOM, where he currently serves as Co-President. This initiative reflects his long-standing focus on regional cooperation, cancer policy, and coordinated institutional action.
Leadership at the Highest Level of Global Cancer Control
Dr. Eduardo Cazap’s international leadership includes one of the most important roles in global oncology: President of the Union for International Cancer Control from 2010 to 2012. He was notably the second Latin American president of UICC since the organization’s founding in 1933.
His presidency placed Latin American oncology at the center of global cancer policy discussions and reflected his commitment to making cancer control a truly international priority. During this period, global health systems were increasingly recognizing cancer and other non-communicable diseases as urgent public health challenges requiring coordinated political, clinical, and civil society action.

He was a signatory of the Paris Charter Against Cancer at the Élysée Palace in 2000, a landmark moment in international cancer advocacy. His later work included leadership and advisory roles with major global health organizations and initiatives focused on cancer prevention, access, policy, and regional cooperation.
He has collaborated with and advised organizations including the World Health Organization, Pan American Health Organization, OECD, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the National Cancer Institute Office of Global Health.
His work in global cancer control reflects a central principle: improving cancer outcomes requires more than clinical expertise alone. It requires prevention strategies, national cancer plans, policy engagement, health system strengthening, financing, education, and cross-border collaboration.
