“Congratulations to my boss Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu on her election as President of the UICC for the 2024-2026 term. This marks a historic moment as she becomes the first African to lead the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

However, her victory was not just symbolic, it was the result of tireless dedication. This was one of the most challenging elections in UICC’s history. Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu’s success was driven not only by her passion but by strategic foresight; by 2023, she had already outlined a comprehensive plan for the changes she believes are crucial to global cancer control, why these reforms are necessary, and how she intends to implement them.

The journey to this victory was not without its challenges. We faced competition, overcame logistical hurdles, and navigated a complex political landscape. However, Dr. Zainab’s resilience, strategic thinking, and ability to inspire others kept us motivated and focused on our goal.
This campaign has had its share of highs and lows.

There were moments of intense pressure, where it seemed the road ahead was uncertain. We faced stiff competition and moments of doubt, overcame logistical hurdles, but through it all, your resilience and grace carried us forward. Your passion for ensuring global equity in cancer treatment, and your empathy for those most in need, were always at the heart of our efforts.

We reached out to hundreds of CEOs and members across continents, not just to ask for votes but to listen—to truly understand their needs and challenges. It was this ability to connect with people on such a personal level that made this campaign stand out. She did not just campaign for a title; she campaigned for change and for a better world for cancer patients everywhere.

A special thank you to all those who stood with us: the tireless advocates, clinicians: Prof. Isaac Adewole, Ministers, Dr. Tunji Alausa, Gevorg, OncoDaily, and so many others. Their belief in your vision was key to this success.

I am particularly grateful for the unwavering hardwork of Team MCF, the UICC membership, and the countless individuals who believed in Dr. Zainab’s vision. Your contributions were instrumental in securing this historic win.

A special thanks to the UICC members for their support. I am confident Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu will excel in her role as president, strengthening UICC’s membership, partnerships, and engagement, and driving forward the urgent need to enhance the accessibility, affordability, and availability of oncology care worldwide.”

This is a momentous achievement, not just for women, but for Africa as a whole, as the election of a female president from Africa is unprecedented.

I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to collaborate with you during your presidency, and we are excited to welcome you to the London Global Cancer Week 2024 next month.

Once again, congratulations Ma’am.”

“Congratulations to H.E. Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu the newly elected President of the UICC 2024-2026.

This will go down in history, the first African to be elected to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). However, I also want to state that Dr. Shinkafi-Bagudu worked so hard for this position, it was not an easy election. Probably, the toughest in UICC. Her preparedness was not only driven by passion but by logic; by 2023, she already prepared a full plan on what she thinks needs to change in global cancer control, why those changes are important and how she want to drive those changes.

Additionally, she engaged on diverse platforms and was 100% ready to listen to everyone in Europe, Asia, America, Africa and all other continents. She reached out to over 3,000 CEOs who are connected to UICC.

Special appreciation to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) members for the support. I know that Dr Shinkafi-Bagudu will be an excellent president. I know that this will increase the UICC membership, partnerships, engagement and more propel the UICC to urgently drive the need to improve accessibility, affordability and availability of oncology care and treatment globally.

Special thanks to MEDICAID CANCER FOUNDATION, Dr. Tunji Alausa, OncoDaily and all the phenomenal patient advocates and clinicians who supported this election .”
