Yerevan State Medical University announced on June 26, 2026, that Professor Armen Muradyan has been re-elected as Rector of YSMU, beginning a new term leading one of Armenia’s most prominent medical education institutions.
At the meeting of the Board of Trustees of Yerevan State Medical University, convened on June 26, a competitive election for the position of Rector was held.
All 20 members of the Board attended the meeting, which was chaired by Board President Mikael Adamyan.
Following a closed secret ballot, Professor Armen A. Muradyan was elected Rector of YSMU by majority vote, receiving 19 votes in favor, with one invalid ballot.
Professor Muradyan is the 22nd Rector of the institution, which has trained medical professionals for more than 100 years.
It should be recalled that on May 27, in accordance with the established procedure, the Board of Trustees of the Yerevan Mkhitar Heratsi State Medical University Foundation announced an open competitive selection process for the position of Rector.

Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi (YSMU) is Armenia’s leading medical university and one of the country’s oldest higher education institutions. Founded in 1920, the university is named after Mkhitar Heratsi, the medieval Armenian physician often regarded as the father of Armenian medicine.
Today, YSMU is home to around 8,000 students from Armenia and 33 other countries. Over the past century, the university has educated generations of healthcare professionals, with approximately 45,000 graduates now contributing to medicine and healthcare systems around the world.

About Armen Muradyan
Professor Armen A. Muradyan, MD, PhD, DSc, is a prominent urologist, physician-scientist, and healthcare administrator. He has served as Rector of Yerevan State Medical University since 2016 and was previously re-elected in 2021. He served as Armenia’s Minister of Healthcare from 2014 to 2016. Since 2014, he has also chaired the Department of Urology and Andrology at YSMU. Before becoming Rector, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Izmirlian Medical Center and as President of the Armenian Association of Urology from 2009 to 2013.
During Professor Muradyan’s tenure as Rector, Yerevan State Medical University significantly expanded its educational, clinical, and research infrastructure. In 2018, the university acquired and modernized the Mikayelyan Institute of Surgery, one of Armenia’s most respected medical centers, which had previously been privatized. With its three university hospitals, YSMU is now among the largest healthcare providers in the region.
During his tenure, Professor Muradyan also initiated the construction of the Rehabilitation Center for Wounded and Disabled Soldiers, which has become one of the leading rehabilitation medicine centers in the world. The establishment of the COBRAIN Scientific-Educational Center for Fundamental Brain Research, together with new policies promoting medical research, has served as a catalyst for the university’s research environment.
In 2025, Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi was recognized as the fastest-growing medical university in the post-Soviet region.
Professor Muradyan was born in Yerevan on July 10, 1972. He is married and has three children.
