Anthony Walsh, Group Director – Medical Physics at Icon Group, shared on LinkedIn:
“Happy International Day of Medical Physics!
Today is a great opportunity to recognise our medical physicists around the world and the incredible impact our profession has on cancer care. There’s always plenty happening in medical physics, and this year at Icon Oncology Group has been no different.
New technology, new techniques and new challenges keep pushing us forward. Our medical physicists are right at the heart of that, helping commission and implement technology and making sure it can be used safely, precisely and effectively for our patients.
What I’m most proud of though is the people behind all of it. Across the Group, we have an incredibly talented medical physics team who bring expertise, curiosity and plenty of problem solving to their work every day. It’s a privilege to work alongside you and see the impact you have across our centres and for our patients.
To all our medical physicists around the world, thank you for everything you do.”
The Role of Medical Physics in Cancer Care
Medical physics plays a fundamental role in modern oncology, supporting the safe, accurate, and effective delivery of radiation-based cancer treatments. By integrating scientific expertise with advanced medical technologies, medical physicists help ensure that radiotherapy is delivered with precision while minimizing unnecessary radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
Their responsibilities extend across multiple aspects of cancer care, including radiation treatment planning, dose optimization, equipment commissioning, quality assurance, and the implementation of emerging radiotherapy technologies. Working closely with radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, and other healthcare professionals, medical physicists contribute to maintaining high standards of treatment quality and patient safety.
As radiation oncology continues to advance, technologies such as image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), and adaptive radiotherapy are creating new opportunities for more precise and individualized cancer treatment. Medical physicists play an essential role in evaluating, implementing, and optimizing these approaches within clinical practice.
International Day of Medical Physics provides an opportunity to recognize the scientific expertise, technical innovation, and dedication of medical physicists worldwide, whose contributions remain essential to advancing radiotherapy and improving the quality of cancer care.
