Yuji Uehara: Are 1976 Palpation Rules Still Best for 21st-Century Medicine?
Yuji Uehara, Medical Oncologist at the National Cancer Center of Japan, shared a post on X about a paper by Illaa Smesseim et al. published in Cancer:
“The origin of the RECIST criteria might surprise you. It all started in 1976, ‘balls under mattresses’. A 50% reduction in size was called a ‘response.’ By-touch rules were then adapted for modern imaging from a 2D area to a simple 1D line (the longest diameter).
So, are rules born from a 1976 palpation experiment still the best for 21st-century medicine?”
