Katell Maguet: Unmet Needs of Young Colorectal Cancer Patients – A New European Study

Katell Maguet, Researcher at Change Katalyst, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Unmet needs of young colorectal cancer patients: a new European study

I am proud to share that our study has just been published in BMC Gastroenterology!

This is the first European study that gives voice to the lived experiences of patients diagnosed with early-age onset colorectal cancer (eoCRC).

We listened to 47 patients and survivors from across Europe, and their stories reveal a clear pattern:

  • Fatigue is often the first, and only symptom, but rarely taken seriously.
  • Diagnosis is frequently delayed, especially for women, whose concerns are dismissed or misattributed.
  • Support with mental health and nutrition is often missing.
  • Young patients are juggling treatment with work, family, and future plans, yet the healthcare system isn’t designed for them.
This publication is an important milestone. It shows how much work is still needed to ensure that young patients are no longer overlooked in awareness campaigns, clinical pathways, or national strategies.

This study is not only important for the patient community, it has also been a turning point in my own journey. I first joined the Dutch focus group as a patient. Then I led the French part of the study. And that is when everything changed for me. I realized I didn’t just want to share my story, I wanted to amplify the voices of others, help shape better care, and contribute to research.

Together, we are stronger.

Thank you to all the patients who shared their stories so openly, and to the incredible team who made this project possible.”
