“What did Childhood Cancer Awareness Month look like in Ghana?

For our Ghana programme team, September meant spending time in communities, schools and health services, as well as using local media to start conversations about childhood cancer and help more people recognise when a child may need care.

Working alongside the Childhood Cancer Society of Ghana, the team spent the month raising awareness and sharing the importance of recognising possible signs of childhood cancer and seeking care early.

The month also included the first Ntoboa Fair, which focused on the shared responsibility to support children with cancer while helping to build stronger local investment in childhood cancer care.

Each of these activities reached people in a slightly different way, but they all shared the same purpose: helping more children with cancer be recognised and supported sooner.

This work matters because protecting what already belongs to every child also means protecting their chance to be recognised, referred and supported as early as possible, so cancer has less opportunity to interrupt their education, relationships, ambitions and childhood.

That matters to our wider Childhood Cancer Awareness Month message too. Protecting what already belongs to every child means doing everything we can so that cancer is recognised and treated as early as possible, reducing the disruption cancer can cause to their education, ambitions and everyday childhood.

We’re so proud of our Ghana team for everything they put into September, and grateful to the healthcare professionals, schools, community members and partners who took part.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month may be over, but the conversations started and relationships strengthened throughout the month will continue.”
