About Belén Garijo
Belén Garijo joined Merck KGaA in 2011 as Chief Operating Officer of the Biopharma business and became President and CEO of Healthcare in 2015. In July 2020, she was appointed Vice Chairman of the Executive Board and Deputy CEO while maintaining her role as CEO of the Healthcare business. She transitioned from Deputy CEO to CEO in May 2021. Under her leadership, the Healthcare division has emerged as a key player in oncology, immunology, and immuno-oncology, driven by a significant portfolio repositioning and transformation of R&D and commercial strategies.
Before joining Merck, Belén served as the Senior Vice President of Global Operations Europe at Sanofi-Aventis and was the Global Integration Leader of Genzyme following its acquisition by Sanofi. With a background that includes various executive roles in R&D and commercial sectors, she began her career as a practicing physician at La Paz Hospital in Madrid. Belén is a medical doctor specialized in clinical pharmacology.
