Cancer prevention is inseparable from the environments in which people live, work and grow.
Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority for example, has an important upstream role in regulating air quality, hazardous waste, chemicals and environmental exposures relevant to cancer prevention.
Yet the communities most exposed to these risks are often those with the fewest resources to prevent, detect and treat cancer. As an African clinical oncologist working at the intersection of cancer care, research, health systems and global oncology, I see our role as more than bringing global knowledge to Africa.
That means building stronger collaborations across disciplines and borders – connecting oncologists, researchers, environmental scientists, policymakers, public-health professionals and communities.”
