Roupen Odabashian: When it comes to real-life cases, physicians still outperform AI
Roupen Odabashian, Internal Medicine Physician and Hematology/Oncology Fellow at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent paper by Rasmus Arvidsson et al. published in BMJ Open:
“Anyone can score 20-25% on a medical exam simply by guessing, since there are five options to choose from.
While large language models excel at multiple choice questions, this doesn’t translate to real patient care or mean AI will replace doctors anytime soon.
Patient care is far more complex – the intricacies and research findings don’t always apply directly to individual patients.
That’s why training AI on medical guidelines and research alone isn’t sufficient for treating patients.
Patient care requires a human element – there’s an art to it beyond just the science.
In this short video, I’ve summarized a recent study showing that when it comes to real-life cases, physicians still outperform AI. Stay tuned for our upcoming research in oncology.”
