Aakash Desai: The PLAN Study Shows Liquid Biopsy is Faster, Accurate, and Cost-Effective
Aakash Desai, Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Phase 1 and Precision Oncology Program at the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The PLAN Study Shows Liquid Biopsy is Faster, Accurate, and Cost-Effective!
A pilot clinical trial published in the European Journal of Cancer! This research investigated a “plasma-first” approach for next-generation sequencing (NGS) in newly diagnosed advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients in Ireland.
The results are highly impactful:
- Speed: Liquid biopsy genotyping (LBG) significantly reduced the time to genomic diagnosis by a median of 21 days compared to traditional tissue biopsy (TBG). This means faster access to critical treatment decisions for patients.
- Accuracy: We observed a remarkable 90% concordance between LBG and TBG in identifying genomic variants.
- Cost-Effectiveness: LBG proved to be less than half the cost of TBG (€1135 vs. €2404) and led to overall cost savings of over €20,000 within the study cohort. This highlights its potential to optimize healthcare resource allocation.
This study provides strong evidence that integrating a “plasma-first” approach for NGS into clinical practice can lead to substantial clinical benefits and financial savings in public healthcare systems. It offers a vital step forward in ensuring more timely and efficient care for NSCLC patients.
Full details can be found in the European Journal of Cancer article.”
