Nirmala Bhoo Pathy: What a grand finale to the London Global Cancer Week
Nirmala Bhoo Pathy, Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at University Malaya, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“What a grand finale to the London Global Cancer Week!!
Speaking at an event in the House of Parliament was truly the icing on the cake!
Had the privilege of bringing insights from Southeast Asia to shed light on the cancer disparities impacting multiethnic settings.
Drawing on over a decade of our work in Asia, I felt immensely proud to see these efforts recognized on such a prestigious platform.
The iconic venue, exquisite food, and most importantly, the incredible people in attendance made it a day to remember.
Sharing the concluding points from my talk:
Insights from Southeast Asia reveal multifaceted cancer disparities shaped by intersecting factors in both high income and low- and middle income countries.
What are the strategic pathways forward?
- All-of-society approach: Mobilizing communities, organizations, public and private sectors.
- Leveraging political will: Engaging leaders to secure funding, resources, and policies.
- Cancer literacy as a priority action area in NCCPs: Dedicated resources, clear goals, and measurable outcomes.
- Amplifying community voice (co-creation): Empowering local perspectives and collaboration.
- Radical inclusivity: Going beyond one-size-fits-all solutions.
- Adopt and adapt best practices across LMICs: Investing in implementation science
A heartfelt thanks to the wonderful Olubukola Ayodele, Susie Stanway, Katie Wakeham, Neil Ranasinghe, Aruni Ghose, Siva Tharshini Ramalingam for making it all possible!”
