Understanding and Prioritizing Cancer Prevention in Women on Women’s Health Week – Medicaid Cancer Foundation

Medicaid Cancer Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn:

“As Women’s Health Week draws to a close, we must keep one urgent conversation alive—understanding and prioritizing cancer prevention in women.

Cancer remains a leading cause of death among women, but it doesn’t have to be. With awareness, routine screenings, and healthy lifestyle choices, many cancers are preventable or treatable when caught early.

In Nigeria:

• An estimated 120,000 new cancer cases occur annually, with over 70% diagnosed at late stages.
• Breast cancer is the most common, accounting for 22.7% of all new cases in women.
• Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent, causing over 8,000 deaths annually—yet it’s 90% preventable with early screening and HPV vaccination.

Globally:

In 2022, there were 9.6 million women living with cancer.
• Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide, with 2.3 million new cases each year.
Over 90% of cervical cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria.

These numbers are not just statistics—they’re our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends.

But cancer doesn’t have to win.

Here’s what we can do:

  • Get screened regularly – Pap smears, mammograms, HPV testing
  • Get vaccinated – The HPV vaccine is a game changer
  • Know the signs – Early detection improves survival
  • Live intentionally – Healthy habits go a long way

At Medicaid Cancer Foundation, we remain steadfast in our commitment to promoting women’s health through education, community outreach, and access to life-saving cancer screenings.

From underserved communities to urban centers, our mission is clear: to ensure that no woman is left behind in the fight against cancer.

Let’s continue to champion this cause beyond Women’s Health Week—because when we empower women with knowledge and care, we protect generations.” Cancer Prevention

Medicaid Cancer Foundation marked the close of Women’s Health Week by emphasizing the need to sustain efforts in cancer prevention and early detection among women.
The organization spotlighted critical statistics on breast and cervical cancer in Nigeria and globally, calling for routine screening, HPV vaccination, and public education.

Their outreach work focuses on making life-saving services accessible across communities, reinforcing the belief that empowered women create healthier futures for all.

The message was clear: empowering women with knowledge and access to cancer prevention is not only life-saving—it’s generational.
