Robert Miller: How many adult patients with cancer participate in clinical trials?

Robert Miller, Chief Medical Science Officer at CancerLinQ, shared on LinkedIn:

“How many adult patients with cancer participate in clinical trials? Like many, I’ve often heard figures like ‘less than 3%,’ or ‘3-5%,’ or ‘no more than 8%,’ but it’s always been unclear where these data came from. This important paper published this week in Journal of Clinical Oncology provides a pretty defensible answer. I won’t give in to my natural tendency to answer with a single integer, and I encourage everyone to read this open access manuscript to understand there is a more nuanced answer. This work was led by Joe Unger from Fred Hutch and distinguished colleagues from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN). It used a national sample of data from the CoC to provide an estimate. I found the estimates broken down by type of cancer program in Figure 3 (for example, NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center versus a community cancer program) of particular interest.”
