Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan: Childhood Cancer Research in Africa, a Growing Need for Collaboration

Associate Professor at University of Gezira, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Childhood Cancer Research in Africa: A Growing Need for Collaboration.

Our recent study Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan, Verna Vanderpuye, Jeannette Parkes, Ibrahim Mahmoud, Ibrahim Qaddoumi and Yuh-Shan Ho published in Pediatric Hematology Oncology Journal offers a comprehensive overview of the landscape of pediatric cancer research in Africa.

While the incidence of childhood cancer is lower compared to high-income countries, it’s on the rise, making it a critical public health issue. Our study found a significant increase in research publications over the past three decades, with Egypt and South Africa leading the way. While collaboration between African countries remains low; international partnerships have enhanced the average number of citations per article.”

Key findings:

  • A growing body of research but still a long way to go.
  • International collaborations enhance research impact but often exclude African lead authorship.
  • Intra-African collaborations are crucial for driving progress.
