
Robert G. Owens Memorial Leukemia Research Grant
Kids Beating Cancer is currently accepting Letters of Intent for the 2025 Robert G. Owens Memorial Leukemia Research Grant, a two-tiered grant supporting basic-science research in pediatric leukemia. Named in honor of John Voight’s grandfather, this award is designed to fuel early discoveries that can lay the foundation for future cures.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must:

Hold an MD, PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent and a faculty (or equivalent) appointment

Be affiliated with a nonprofit or academic institution based in the United States
-
Submit original, unpublished research (conference abstracts must show significant updates)

Demonstrate experience in pediatric cancer research

Show clear plans to avoid budgetary or scientific overlap if funded by other grants

Postdoctoral researchers are eligible to apply
Funding at a glance:

Tier 1: 100,000 USD for 1 year to pilot and validate feasibility

Tier 2: 100,000 USD for 1 year (invitation-only), based on successful Tier 1 results

Funds may be used for PI salary (within NIH cap), equipment, supplies, and research staff
-
Indirect costs, PR, advertising, memberships, and non-research travel are not allowed
Research focus:
This grant supports basic science investigations in pediatric leukemias. It aims to uncover fundamental mechanisms or pathways with long-term potential to improve leukemia treatment. Projects focused on translational science (e.g., therapies or clinical applications) should instead apply for the John Voight Memorial Grant.
