Elisabetta Zanon: Great Event on Human Papillomavirus-Related Cancers
Elisabetta Zanon, Chief Executive of the European Cancer Organisation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Great event in the European Parliament today on human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers. Many thanks to our host, MEP Tilly Metz, and to our speakers: Daniel Kelly OBE, Kim Hulscher; Rui Medeiros, Bucciardini Raffaella, Marina Davidashvili, Karam Adel of European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Maarten Postma, Amil Družić.
Key takeaways:
- Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Research Mission on Cancer are achieving tangible results in the elimination of HPV-related cancer.
- Universal vaccination is increasingly being implemented across the EU. Just three months ago, Bulgaria extended HPV vaccination to all boys and young adults, not just girls.
- Congratulations to Portugal and Ireland on their significant achievements Amy Nolan
- Inequalities, however, remain, with vaccination rates remaining sub-optimal in several countries.
- Although the EU recommends HPV testing as the preferred method for cervical cancer screening, several Member States have yet to adopt it as the primary screening tool.
- Efforts towards the goal of eliminating HPV-related cancers should continue through stronger political commitment and sustained investment in the next EU multiannual budget.”
