
New SIOG Guidelines on Safe Corticosteroid Use in Older Cancer Patients
SIOG – International Society of Geriatric Oncology shared a post on LinkedIn about recent article by Rupert Bartsch et al., published on Journal of Geriatric Oncology.
“Corticosteroids are widely used in Oncology, but how can we ensure they’re used safely and effectively in older adults, who often face added risks from polypharmacy, comorbidities, and age-related vulnerabilities?
A new publication featured in JGO, the official journal of SIOG, delivers the first expert consensus on this issue:
“Corticosteroid therapy in older adults with cancer: Expert recommendations from a task force of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology”
This guidance addresses:
- Common indications for corticosteroids in cancer care
- Key risks in older patients (e.g., delirium, hypertension, bone loss, drug interactions)
- Evidence-based strategies to reduce or spare corticosteroid use
