Cancer Research UK — Career Development Fellowship (Lung Cancer Priority Area)

This Cancer Research UK (CRUK) fellowship supports clinician scientists who have gained a higher research degree, have some postdoctoral experience, and are ready to make the first step towards developing their own research niche. Lung cancer is an explicitly named top-priority disease area under CRUK’s strategic focus on cancers of unmet need, alongside brain, oesophageal, pancreatic, liver, and stomach cancers. Proposals spanning discovery, translational, and clinical research relevant to lung cancer are all in scope. Applications are reviewed twice annually; the next full deadline is currently open for submission.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a scientist, clinician, or healthcare worker based at a UK university, medical school, hospital, or research institute
  • Must demonstrate the ability to meet the range of skills and experience outlined in CRUK’s “Establish Independence” competency framework
  • Must not have previously held a substantial multi-year independent fellowship
  • Must not hold a permanent academic position that supports your salary
  • Contact CRUK at least one month before the deadline for a mandatory pre-submission eligibility discussion

Funding Details:

  • Salary support at appropriate career grade plus a £6,500 annual supplement; running costs and equipment covered
  • Duration typically up to 5 years; exact amount varies by project scope and is confirmed with CRUK prior to application
