
CRUK Early Detection & Diagnosis Primer Award
Early Detection & Diagnosis Primer Award is a seed-funding up to £100 000 for up to one year to empower researchers (new to or established in ED&D) to pursue high-risk, high-reward pilot studies, forge novel collaborations, and generate proof-of-principle data that will catalyse future work in cancer early detection and diagnosis.
Eligibility Criteria:

Career Stage: Early-career, mid-career or established researchers; clinicians, non-clinical scientists or healthcare professionals.

Experience: At least some postdoctoral or equivalent research experience.

Host Institution: Based at a UK university, medical school, hospital or research institute.

Scope:
-
Novel ideas or technologies with clear line-of-sight to ED&D impact.

Interdisciplinary or non-traditional cancer fields applying to ED&D.

Out of Remit:
-
Studies without any plausible path to early detection impact.

Population-level screening trials (see Prevention & Population schemes).

Duration: Up to 1 year

Quantum: Up to £100 000, covering:

Salaries for postdocs or technical support staff

Consumables, reagents, pilot experiments

Equipment essential to the pilot work

Collaborative travel, networking, training or exchange visits

Registered Reports Option: Teams may opt into CRUK’s multi-journal Registered Reports pilot.
