
Team Grant: Bringing Biology to Cancer Prevention
This Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funding opportunity supports interdisciplinary research teams aiming to advance the biological and mechanistic understanding of cancer etiology and risk factors. The goal is to identify new targets for prevention, risk reduction, and early detection of cancer. Collaboration across disciplines—ranging from public health and epidemiology to molecular biology and immunology—is encouraged.
Eligibility Criteria:

The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be an independent researcher at a Canadian postsecondary institution or affiliated research organization.

The NPA must hold a substantive role in Canada for the duration of the grant.

Teams must include at least four participant types:

One member from CIHR Pillar 1 (biomedical)
-
One member from CIHR Pillar 2, 3, or 4
-
An Early Career Researcher (ECR)

A knowledge user (e.g., policy maker, practitioner, patient partner)

Projects involving First Nations, Inuit, or Métis must include Indigenous researchers or demonstrate meaningful Indigenous engagement.

All NPA and PAs must complete CIHR’s Sex and Gender Training Module.

Each applicant can only submit one application as NPA.

Total available: Up to CAD 32,000,000 and JPY 380,000,000

Amount per grant:

Up to CAD 400,000/year for 5 years (max CAD 2,000,000 per grant)

International Japan–Canada teams also eligible for up to JPY 380,000,000 for the Japanese partner.
