Maria (Masha) Babak: The results from the very first clinical trial in which I had the privilege to directly participate
Maria (Masha) Babak, Assistant Professor at City University of Hong Kong, shared a post by The Babak Lab on LinkedIn:
“ Clinical Tuesdays As a basic scientist in preclinical drug discovery, I have realized the importance of not just advancing scientific knowledge, but also ensuring that these advancements reach patients and have a meaningful impact on their lives. With this in mind, I have made it my lifetime goal to integrate and translate basic science into practical solutions that can benefit patients directly. Today, I am absolutely delighted to share the results from the very first clinical trial in which I had the privilege to directly participate.”
Quoting The Babak Lab’s post:
“Clinical Tuesdays This work published in Clinical Cancer Research journal is the result of a collaborative effort between scientists and visionary medical doctors who share a common goal of improving patient outcomes.
The study focused on exploring the effectiveness of administering oxaliplatin through pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) in patients suffering from peritoneal metastasis. Peritoneal metastasis is a particularly challenging condition to treat, and this research aimed to investigate the potential benefits of PIPAC as a therapeutic approach.
PIPAC involves delivering chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity, allowing for better distribution and penetration of the drug. We aimed to determine the safety, effectiveness, and optimal dosage of PIPAC with oxaliplatin.
At the end of the study we observed that a significant percentage of patients showed stable disease, indicating that PIPAC with oxaliplatin could be a promising treatment option for this subgroup of patients. Further research is needed to validate these results and explore its long-term effects.
Big thanks to Wei Peng Yong, Wee Han Ang, Wang Lingzhi and other co-authors for leading this exciting project!”
