Joanna Metzner-Sadurski: Expanding Cancer Education Through Hausa and Sign Language

Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, President of Oncology101.org, Adjunct Professor at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:

“So excited to help create cancer education videos in Hausa and sign language with Hannatu Ayuba and her team at TeleOncology Hub.

Every community has different beliefs, experiences, and approaches to education. What works in one health system may need to be adapted for another. We need to listen first, understand local needs, and create education together.

For breast health, this means addressing fears and beliefs that may lead someone to hide a breast lump or delay medical evaluation. Patients need to know where to turn-and how a navigator can help them connect with medical services.

We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We can strengthen the oncology services and navigation networksalready in place, helping patients access care.

I love Dr. Hannatu Ayuba’s point: people ‘own’ the videos on their phones. They can watch again, share with family, and return to the information whenever they need it. They trust it. Grateful to Jasmine Kamboj for inspiring and supporting this work and for her guidance as an Oncology101.org advisor, alongside Ruiling Yuan. Bringing people together makes this work possible.

That is health literacy: education people can understand and use, grounded in their community and connected to care.”

Hannatu Ayuba, Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist at National Hospital Abuja, CEO of Cancer Consciousness Initiative, and Program Lead at TeleOncology Hub, shared on LinkedIn:

“The hearing-impaired community appreciation speech session at Adama Pinktober in the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital took place during the screening session.

The community had never had such an experience with cancer education. They received the same information as everyone else at the Townhall meeting on Thursday, 15 October 2026, participated in the screening process, and experienced an amiable and inclusive environment.

One participant had a breast lump detected that was too small for the trucut biopsy needle. We discussed the research protocols with the radiologists and agreed that an excision biopsy was appropriate. Samples were sent for H&E, with plans for IHC if required through Roche, PCR for biomarkers including ER, PR, Ki-67, HER2/neu and P53 mutation analysis with Babcock University, and molecular testing if eligible.

She will also be subscribed to GIFSHIP NHIA insurance and supported through patient navigation.

At Cancer Consciousness Initiative, we include sign language to complement our cancer health literacy videos, through a collaboration with Oncology101.org, Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, and Imran Foundation’s Ibrahim Lawal.

Awareness to Access.

Appreciation to all our partners, enablers, sponsors, and stakeholders in the TeleOncology Hub, together with our Community Patient Navigation program members. Implementation research is not easy in LMICs, but when there is a will, there is a way.

See you at the Taraba Pinktober Townhall meeting on 22 October 2026, with screening beginning on 22 October and the Mega Rally on 24 October.”

About Pink October

Pink October is a global awareness campaign dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. It encourages women to prioritize their health, attend regular screenings, and learn about breast cancer risk factors. The campaign also highlights the importance of access to timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and supportive care. Through education, community engagement, and collective action, we can help reduce the impact of breast cancer and support those affected by the disease.
