The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has named Thomas E. Stinchcombe, MD, FASCO, as the next Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO). His term will begin on January 1, 2027.
Stinchcombe has a long-standing relationship with JCO, where he currently serves as an Associate Editor. ASCO highlighted his experience as a leading peer reviewer and editor, as well as his clinical and research leadership within the National Clinical Trials Network and Duke Cancer Institute.
As Editor-in-Chief, Stinchcombe plans to focus on maintaining rigorous peer-review standards, accelerating publication timelines, highlighting research with direct relevance to clinical care, and broadening the journal’s geographic reach and international reviewer community. Being appointed, he said:
“I am honored to lead JCO as Editor-in-Chief. My vision is to apply the lessons I have learned as associate editor to elevate studies that directly impact clinical care, streamline our publication timelines, and expand JCO’s geographic reach and reviewer pool across the globe.”
About Thomas E. Stinchcombe
Stinchcombe is a medical oncologist and member of the Thoracic Oncology Program at Duke Cancer Institute, where his clinical work focuses on thoracic malignancies, including non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, and mesothelioma. His work combines clinical care with clinical trials and the development of new therapies for patients with these diseases.
He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan, and completed a hematology and oncology fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
His research has centered particularly on clinical trials in lung cancer, and he has also been involved in national collaborative research through the National Clinical Trials Network. Stinchcombe is currently listed as a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Thoracic Malignancy Steering Committee.

JCO covers a broad range of oncology disciplines, including breast, gastrointestinal, thoracic, genitourinary, hematologic, pediatric, and neuro-oncology, as well as supportive care, cancer prevention, molecular oncology, and clinical pharmacology. Original research reports are central to the journal, alongside reviews, editorials, commentaries, clinical trial updates, and other content relevant to cancer care. The journal is published three times per month.
Stinchcombe will assume leadership of JCO on January 1, 2027, beginning a new chapter for one of the most widely recognized journals in clinical oncology.
