Christine McIver: In the spring of 2024, I am retiring from Kids Cancer Care

Christine McIver, Founder & Chief Executive Officer at Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, recently announced:

“I have news!

In the spring of 2024, I am retiring from Kids Cancer Care.

Today is the 29th anniversary of Kids Cancer Care and as I move into this new phase of life, I find myself remembering the past while thinking about the future.

Kids Cancer Care has been my life’s work and life’s purpose. I established the foundation to fill an immense gap in programs and services for families facing childhood cancer. It started with one little boy, my son Derek, who was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in 1986. While Derek did not survive, he was the spark who ignited in me a passion like no other to fight childhood cancer.

Today, facing childhood cancer in Alberta looks very different than it did 30 years ago because of Kids Cancer Care. We have made important inroads together, fighting this disease and supporting children and families on what is often a life-long journey.

Although we have achieved a lot, there is still so much more to do. I am inspired by the potential of Kids Cancer Care — a community and organization we have worked so hard to build. Thanks to the dedication of our amazing staff and volunteers, and the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and fundraising partners, I know I am leaving this foundation in extremely capable hands.

A search for a new Chief Executive Officer, led by DHR Global, is now underway. I am excited by the possibilities that a new leader will bring to Kids Cancer Care. I know the future holds great things for Kids Cancer Care and for the children and families we serve.

While Kids Cancer Care started with a single spark, it takes many, many sparks to keep a fire burning. Many individuals have stoked the fires of Kids Cancer Care over the years. I am grateful to every one of you.

Although a flame for children with cancer will always burn in my heart, it is time I pass the torch to a new generation of leaders to tend the fire, care for the children, and fulfill our vision of A cure for every child, care for every family.

With warmth and gratitude,
Christine McIver, M.S.M., LLD (Hon), CFRE
Founder and Chief Executive Officer ”
