Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: A gathering of the Lancet Commission on Cancer in the Commonwealth
Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I started my week on a high at The Commonwealth, Marlborough House, attending a gathering of the Lancet Commission on Cancer in the Commonwealth.
Along with other amazing commissioners, research supporters, members of the Commonwealth Advisory Committee on Health, Undersecretary, and even Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus—it was a week of rich, fulfilling discussions, history lessons, fun moments, presentations, and keynote addresses—all highlighting issues in cancer across the Commonwealth nations. A moving lived experience was shared by Uzoamka Nwamarah.
The timing of the meeting couldn’t have been better, taking place just ahead of the Health Ministers Meeting in May and the UNHLM at UNGA later this year. The big task now is how to prioritize findings and present evidence-based solutions to leverage the huge convening power of the Commonwealth.
All of this would not have been possible without the leadership and commitment shown by Baroness Patricia, Scotland in what was her last week at the helm. The organization of the meeting was stellar, and you can all expect a fantastic commission report.
Many exciting and excellent conversations took place, and while you’ll have to wait to read the final report, what’s unarguably clear is the need for equal access to prevention, early detection, and treatment.
For me, it was incredibly inspiring to see experts and leaders come together to propose actionable strategies to close the gap in cancer care. Thank you to our chairs, Rifat Atun, Bhawna Sirohi, Mary Gospodarowicz, with Lancet Editor-in-Chief David Collingridge and Smriti Patodia.
It was also wonderful to see my friends at Marlborough House and commend the hard work they put into this—Layne Robinson, Emily Gilmour, Janneth Mghamba, Karina Gosalia.”
