Ulrika Årehed Kågström: We celebrate the research – and see hope for the future

Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the Secretary-General of the Swedish Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“We celebrate the research – and see hope for the future!

For the tenth year in a row, Cancerfonden has presented the Cancer Researcher of the Year award – an award that recognizes groundbreaking research and the researchers who drive the fight against cancer forward. This year’s winner is Kristian Pietras, Professor of Molecular Medicine at Lund University. Congratulations, Kristian!

Together with his research team, Kristian has shown that a cancer tumour is not just a collection of mutated cells – but an entire ecosystem in which the tumour and its surroundings communicate and interact. By understanding and disrupting this interaction, we can find new ways to fight cancer. Absolutely amazing!

It was an evening filled with warmth, commitment and a joint tribute to research – the force that takes us forward in the fight against cancer. Seeing so many actors from different parts of society rally around this important goal gives hope.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Elin Ekman, who with warmth and commitment shared her experiences of living with chronic cancer. I would also like to extend a big thank you to Ebba Kleberg von Sydow, who so professionally and delicately led the evening’s guests through an inspiring program where research was in focus.

Of course, I would also like to thank the Swedish Cancer Society‘s research board, headed by chairman Malin Sund, as well as all the previous winners of Cancer Researcher of the Year who were there and brightened up the evening.

And last but not least – another big congratulations and thank you to this year’s winner, Kristian Pietras!

Now we look ahead to new discoveries and goals. Together we can defeat cancer.”
