Sidra Naz: Honored to serve as the Lead Researcher on a groundbreaking colon cancer research project by Luigi Ricciardiello

Sidra Naz, Postdoctoral Researcher at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Lead Researcher for Transformative Colorectal Cancer Care Initiative:
I am honored to serve as the Lead Researcher on a groundbreaking colon cancer research project under the supervision of the esteemed and internationally recognized Professor Dr. Luigi Ricciardiello, MD, a distinguished Principal Investigator and recipient of the prestigious R01 NIH grant.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer, and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.

The United States ranks third globally in the incidence of colorectal cancer, emphasizing the critical need for continued advancements in screening, prevention, and treatment strategies to address this prevalent and high-impact disease.

Our research initiative addresses critical challenges surrounding colon cancer, a major public health concern marked by significant health disparities in early detection, treatment access, and outcomes—disproportionately affecting underserved communities.

Beyond health inequities, the economic toll of colon cancer, including prolonged hospital stays, costly treatments, and lost productivity, exacerbates the strain on patients, families, and the healthcare system.

Our research seeks to identify actionable solutions that reduce these burdens, enhance care accessibility, and improve patient outcomes.

I am honored to contribute to a project of such profound significance, working alongside a dedicated team to advance equitable healthcare and create meaningful change.

The findings of this project submitted for prestigious international scientific DDW 2025 meeting. Dr. Luigi Ricciardiello, MD is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

His research focuses on colorectal cancer prevention, particularly exploring chemoprevention strategies for hereditary and sporadic colorectal cancers.

He has been the principal investigator (PI) on numerous grants from the Italian Foundation for Cancer Research (AIRC), studying chemopreventive compounds and molecular mechanisms in colorectal tumorigenesis. Dr. Ricciardiello leads a phase 3 international clinical trial on Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, investigating the omega-3 PUFA eicosapentaenoic acid for chemoprevention.

He also co-coordinated the EU-funded Pathway-27 project on Metabolic Syndrome prevention.

He has held leadership roles, including chairing committees at United European Gastroenterology and serving on the executive board of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE).

A passionate educator, Dr. Ricciardiello has coordinated gastroenterology courses and authored educational material like the colon cancer chapter in the Unigastro Handbook of Gastroenterology.

He has lectured at major conferences such as DDW and UEG Week, reviewed for leading journals and conferences, and published over 120 papers in high-impact journals like Nature, Lancet Oncology, and Gastroenterology.”
