Sami Mansfield: Racial disparities in recommending PI3K inhibitors in black women with mBC
Sami Mansfield, Founder of Cancer Wellness for Life, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“New study highlighting the racial disparities in recommending PI3K inhibitors in black women with metastatic breast cancer from Dr. Elenora Teplinksy at the Living Beyond Breast Cancer metastatic conference.
The reasons why are largely due to the common side effects of elevated blood sugar from these treatments and the high percentage of diabetes in our black women.
While hearing this wasn’t surprising, it was frustrating to hear given what we know about the role of lifestyle strategies, especially using skeletal muscle the biggest disposer of glucose in the body. These biases are missing the opportunity to provide our patients with the best clinical and supportive strategies.
Elevating the awareness of these gaps and opportunities is a powerful part of be the change to improve the quality of life and length of life in our cancer patients.”
