Hathal Haddad: Salvage Brachytherapy – A Second Chance for Local Control

Hathal Haddad, Editorial Board Member at Brachytherapy Journal, shared a post by Jean-Michel Hannoun-Levi, Professor of Radiation Oncology Antoine Lacassagne Cancer Center – University Côte d’Azur, on LinkedIn:

“Salvage Brachytherapy: A Second Chance for Local Control
The latest GEC-ESTRO review confirms that salvage brachytherapy is an effective re-irradiation strategy for local recurrences in prostate, breast, gynecologic, head & neck, and rectal cancers.
– High local control
– Lower toxicity
– Preserves organs and quality of life
When recurrence strikes, Brachytherapy offers a targeted, minimally invasive option—especially in experienced hands.”

Quoting Jean-Michel Hannoun-Levi‘s post:

“On behalf of the GEC-ESTRO, I am delighted to share our manuscript just published in the Green Journal focusing on Salvage Brachytherapy for local recurrence of cancer after definitive irradiation. Salvage Brachytherapy is a treatment modality with high efficacy and in experienced hands is accompanied with low-rates of serious side effects. As a consequence, salvage-BT should be performed in experienced centres and radiation oncologists should feel obliged to obtain appropriate education and training in BT / salvage BT and to provide this specific training to more junior colleagues in order to provide the best salvage treatment for our patients.”
