Robert Miller: Defining Musical Toxicity and its Frequency
Robert Miller, Chief Medical Science Officer at CancerLinQ shared on LinkedIn about recent paper by Jessica F. Burlile et al., titled “Musician’s Experience After Breast Cancer Treatment: Defining Musical Toxicity and its Frequency” published on JCO Oncology Practice.
Authors: Jessica F. Burlile, Joshua D. Cameron, Heather J. Gunn, Nicole L. Larson, Jennifer L. Bradt, Judy C. Boughey, Mary M. Mrdutt, Fergus J. Couch, Janet E. Olson, Valerie Cangie, Shawna Ehlers, Yasamin Sharifzadeh, Kathryn J. Ruddy, Dean A. Shumway, Charles L. Loprinzi, and Elizabeth J. Cathcart-Rake.
“I’m an oncologist and a musician and can’t say I had ever heard of acute musical toxicity from cancer treatment being formally described and studied before. But of course hardly surprising that it exists (neuropathy, fatigue, cognitive impacts, etc.). Bravo to the Mayo Clinic authors for doing this patient-centric study and the musical patients who participated. Table 2 (JCO Oncology Practice article is open access so no paywall) showing incidence of toxicities is illuminating.”
