Highlights from the 4th POEM Group Scientific Meeting in Amman
From May 1–3, 2025, Amman, Jordan hosted the 4th Scientific Meeting of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean (POEM) Group, bringing together experts and advocates from over 36 countries. Organized by the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center, the meeting served as a valuable platform for pediatric oncology professionals across the region to connect, share progress, and explore ways to improve care for children with cancer.
This year’s gathering focused on collaboration, practical solutions, and knowledge exchange. Sessions covered a range of topics including retinoblastoma, osteosarcoma, access to novel therapies, CAR-T implementation, and the importance of nursing leadership. The energy was thoughtful and purposeful, with participants—from early-career fellows to seasoned leaders—contributing ideas and experiences that reflect the diverse realities of cancer care in the region.
There were meaningful discussions around equity, innovation, and capacity building. Voices from Armenia, Jordan, India, the U.S., and beyond underscored a shared commitment to addressing gaps in care and ensuring that advancements reach every child in need. The atmosphere was one of mutual support, respect, and practical optimism.
In this special OncoDaily feature, we’ve compiled reflections and highlights from those who were part of POEM 2025. Their words offer a glimpse into the conversations that took place—and the collaborative spirit driving pediatric oncology forward in the region.
“So grateful to be invited to Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean (POEM) Group 4th Scientific Conference. Connecting with ped oncologists to improve care and access for kids with cancer has been truly inspiring. Congratulations to Dr. Rawad Rihani and Gevorg Tamamyan for fantastic reception to start POEM2025.”
“Grateful to be part of the Retinoblastoma Workshop at the POEM Group’s 4th Scientific Meeting in Amman, Jordan.
Thanks to the support and mentorship of Dr. Yacoub Yousef, this has been a meaningful milestone in my journey – and, I hope, in Armenia’s future in retinoblastoma care.
The workshop showcased real-world examples of how countries like Jordan have transformed retinoblastoma outcomes through multidisciplinary expertise and system-wide collaboration. Listening to these stories was both inspiring and instructive.
I’m also honored for the opportunity to be a fellow in The Eye Cancer Foundation’s Retinoblastoma Fellowship Program, at The King Hussein Cancer Center. This training will equip me with the tools to contribute to establishing comprehensive retinoblastoma services in Armenia – something we need.
This day marks not just a step forward professionally, but a commitment to build something lasting for children back home. Armenia is next!
Iam also thankful to Dr. Gevorg Tamamyan whose efforts to develop retinoblastoma care in Armenia created the path that led me to this opportunity.”
“Proud moment! At the POEM Scientific Congress in Jordan our Ruzanna Papyan is presenting the multicenter clinical trial in osteosarcoma involving 9 countries, which she is leading!”

Grateful to walk this journey with you, Julieta – you make our team stronger every day.”
“Since the very beginning, we at the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center made a clear and conscious choice: to be the VOICE OF THE VOICELESS.
In a region DOUBLE BURDENED BY POLITICAL CONFLICTS AND INSTABILITY, where cancer patients—especially children—face FINANCIAL, SOCIAL, and SYSTEMIC BARRIERS, we chose to stand with them. We chose HOPE, DIGNITY, and ACCESS.
At the POEM Group 4th Scientific Meeting, I had the privilege of sharing our story with an inspiring group of global oncology leaders from 36 countries.
I spoke about how KHCF has worked relentlessly to overcome the BARRIERS that prevent many from accessing LIFE-SAVING CANCER CARE.
To meet our promises, we developed INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS AND STRATEGIES, including:
POLICY ADVOCACY: We believe that to make a real impact, CANCER CARE MUST BE EMBEDDED AS A CROSS-CUTTING PRIORITY in public policies—from HEALTH and EDUCATION to SOCIAL PROTECTION and ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. We work tirelessly to HUMANIZE PUBLIC POLICIES, ensuring that cancer is not sidelined, but prioritized across all sectors.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: We confronted the TABOOS and NEGLECT surrounding cancer with AWARENESS and COMPASSION. We mobilize COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS to spread knowledge, working in SCHOOLS, UNIVERSITIES, WORKPLACES, and beyond. From CITIES to VILLAGES, we are determined to ensure NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND.
GOODWILL FUND (GWF): Through our GOODWILL FUND, we provide critical support to UNDERPRIVILEGED, DISPLACED, and REFUGEE CANCER PATIENTS from regions like PALESTINE, SYRIA, YEMEN, SUDAN, IRAQ, and others severely impacted by political conflict. This fund allows us to ensure that TREATMENT WITH DIGNITY is accessible to those most in need, regardless of their background or circumstance.
CANCER CARE INSURANCE: To ensure SUSTAINABLE FINANCING, we launched a NON-PROFIT, COMMUNITY-BASED CANCER CARE INSURANCE PROGRAM. This innovative program, now serving over 200,000 SUBSCRIBERS, provides financial protection to patients, ensuring they receive the LIFE-SAVING TREATMENT they deserve, year after year.
Together, we can create a world where no one’s access to cancer care is determined by their wealth, background, or the political climate of their country.
At KHCF/C: we are not just treating cancer. We are fighting for JUSTICE, DIGNITY, and a future where CANCER CARE IS A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEGE.”
“Honored to have been part of the 4th POEM meeting that takes place in Amman. We come together with a shared purpose: to support children battling cancer around the globe. Together, we are amplifying our efforts and creating a stronger network of support.”
“Just wrapped up an unforgettable experience at the ALSAC Eastern Mediterranean Regional Conference, held alongside the 4th POEM’S Scientific Meeting which was hosted by the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center in Amman, Jordan (May 1–3, 2025).
Three days filled with powerful conversations, fresh ideas, and genuine connections.
I walked away with practical strategies from:
• Ansley Murphy on the future of digital fundraising
• Christine Miller on how to harness the power of your brand
• A thoughtful panel on crisis navigation and reputation management in the nonprofit world
Even more meaningful? Meeting 45 incredible professionals from 17 foundations across 10 countries—all united by a shared mission and passion
Thank you to the teams at ALSAC and St. Jude Global for creating a space that inspires learning, collaboration, and hope.
Already looking forward to what we’ll build together next.”
“I have the honor to organize and lead the Retinoblastoma Workshop held during the POEM 2025 Scientific Meeting, in collaboration with the POEM Group, St. Jude Global Retinoblastoma team and King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center. The workshop brought together experts and teams from across the POEM region to exchange knowledge and experiences, strengthen collaborations, and advance efforts to improve outcomes for children with retinoblastoma.
