Petra Ibum Adjah: The hardest lesson I’ve learned working in the oncology space
Petra Ibum Adjah, Communications Manager for Pink Africa Foundation (PAF) and Non-Clinical Oncology Patient Navigator, posted the following on LinkedIn:
“The Hardest Lesson I’ve Learned Working in the Oncology Space.
As an oncology patient navigator, I’ve had the privilege of supporting patients through their cancer journeys.
But one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is also one of the hardest: you can’t force anyone to choose conventional treatment over alternative therapies.
No matter how much I educate, advocate, and empathize, ultimately, the decision is the patient’s to make.
And sometimes, that decision might not align with what I believe is the best choice for a good outcome.
So, what do we do as patient navigators?
- We educate, we support, and we respect the patient’s autonomy.
- We ensure they have all the information they need to make an informed decision.
And when they make a choice that might not be the one we would have chosen for them, we continue to support them, without judgment.
It’s not always easy, but it’s essential.”
