“A Step Forward in the Fight Against Cancer.
Kisumu County – 22nd November 2024
Today, the National Cancer Institute of Kenya (NCI-K), led by its Board Chair, Dr. Timothy Olweny, and the CEO, Dr. Elias Melly accompanied Health CS Dr. Debora Barasa to the Kenya International Cancer Conference 2024 in Kisumu County.
This significant event brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and advocates to discuss the latest advancements in cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.
During her address, the Health CS emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to combating cancer. She highlighted the importance of early screening, particularly urging Kenyans to take advantage of the free HPV vaccine offered by the government to prevent cervical cancer.
This aligns with the global goal of achieving 90-70-90 targets, aiming to ensure 90% of girls are vaccinated with HPV vaccine, 70% of women screened for cervical cancer, and 90% of women with cervical cancer receive treatment.
Dr. Barasa also acknowledged the crucial role played by various cancer organizations in providing patient support, navigation, and palliative care. She encouraged these organizations to continue their invaluable work in improving the lives of cancer patients.
The CS also thanked the Kenya Society of Hematology Organization for organizing this conference, offering a platform for high-level engagement in knowledge sharing, networking, and advocacy, and fostering a collaborative approach to addressing the challenges posed by cancer.”
